THE MONKEES ON UK TV!

This page details all info about the Great Britain run of The Monkees television show from 1967 to 1968 on BBC1 and BBC2.

The following is the extract from the TV listing of Saturday December 31st 1966:-

6.15 to 6.40
THE MONKEES
A new film series
for the young in heart
starring
DAVY JONES, PETER TORK,
MICKY DOLENZ and MIKE NESMITH
who find the deck stacked against them in....
Royal Flush
See Facing Page

The above is a replica of how the very first programme was listed in this edition of Radio Times.

On the opposite page was the classic black and white photo of the whole group posing as cowboys (from the pilot episode) with the headline underneath:-

THE MONKEES
A swinging, new series from America about a four-man pop group

Then the following text was written underneath the photo and headline:-

[1] 6.15 Off the launching pad tonight is a new series which is driving American television viewers wild. Called The Monkees it stars four long-haired young men, who encounter adventures as a pop group. "What do The Monkees want?" asks a promotion handout. It answers: "To be free...to make every day Saturday night, to climb impossible mountains, to take a trolley car to the moon, to deflate stuffed shirts."

The Monkees group - now selling millions of discs in America - was created by television executives who put an advert in a paper asking for: MADNESS, Four insane, spirited, and hip boys...with the courage to work.

Do the successful four - Davy Jones, Peter Tork, Micky Dolenz and Mike Nesmith - live up to the demanding requirements? Well, judge for yourselves from tonight.

The above is the word for word transcript from the very first British TV guide that featured their first broadcast. The front cover does not show the group but has a snowflake artistic design in black and pink with the headline New Shows for the New Year.

Incidentally prior to the first UK broadcast the shows before this first airing were:

5.15pm - Juke Box Jury
5.40pm - News
5.50pm - Dr. Who

This was on BBC One - New Years Eve 1966

Special thanks to Sue for providing all of the above info which helped kickstart this page!
